Dental / Vision Insurance
Short-term health insurance provides temporary, limited coverage for unexpected medical events, typically lasting one to four months.
Short-term health insurance coverage varies greatly depending on the plan and the insurance company you buy from. These types of plans are not required to comply with Affordable Care Act (ACA) guidelines. ACA plans are required to provide certain levels of coverage — called minimum essential coverage. Short-term health plans are not required to meet the same standards.
Short-term medical insurance typically provides some level of coverage for preventive care, doctor visits, urgent care, and emergency care. There may also be coverage for prescriptions. Some plans also offer cost savings for seeing in-network providers.
Make sure to read the “exclusions and limitations” information before buying any plan. This will tell you what’s covered and not covered by a certain plan.
Is Short Term Health Insurance for me?
Short Term Health Insurance may be the right choice for you if you are:
-
Waiting for open enrollment to apply for an Affordable Care Act (ACA) plan
-
Not experiencing a situation that’s a qualifying life event and you don’t qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) to apply for an ACA plan
-
Waiting for ACA coverage to start
-
Looking for coverage to bridge you to Medicare
-
Turning 26 and are coming off your parent's insurance
-
Between jobs or waiting for benefits to begin at your new job
-
Healthy and under 65
Important Considerations
-
Not a Substitute for ACA Plans
Short-term plans are not a comprehensive replacement for ACA-compliant plans, which offer
broader coverage and consumer protections
-
Potential for High Out-of-Pocket Costs
High deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums can lead to significant expenses if you require
significant medical care.
-
Limited Consumer Protections
Short-term plans don't offer the same consumer protections as ACA plans, such as guaranteed
coverage for pre-existing conditions or limits on out-of-pocket expenses
